  CHAPTER ONE

Madison stood outside the house, contemplating whether to catch a cab and head back to the airport to get on the first flight far away from where she stood, but she knew she could not. Her sister would have flown to wherever she ran and slit her throat for missing her wedding day. Maybe she should have planned her arrival on the exact day of the wedding, which meant a lot less time being around her mother, but she was already there and felt like melting into a puddle of despair. She could not handle her mother's tantrums, the remarks that always offended her. Her mother was the sole reason she moved almost halfway across the world, the only reason she stayed away from her family for so long.

She dragged her suitcase along with herself across the stone pathway that led to the entrance of the house. All she wanted to do was to bolt in the opposite direction, but she knew that sooner or later she had to confront her dreadful mother. It was the best time than any other since she could have made her sister happy in the process.

She pressed the button of the doorbell of her parents' home and crossed her arms over her chest. They were expecting her. As soon as she landed, she made sure to inform her sister of her arrival. Her sister was fearful of airplanes, so to save the bride-to-be from having a heart attack, Madison made certain that she contacted her sister.

She heard footsteps nearing the door and a smile flashed across the jet-lagged woman's lips. Her big sister stood in front of her with a stunning smile of her own and pulled Madison into an embrace.

Madison could smell the cherry blossom shampoo intoxicating her nostrils as her nose grazed against Melody’s thick, silky, brunette hair.

They released each other after a few long seconds. "You are finally here!" Her older sister squealed with excitement and love.

"I could not miss your wedding, could I?" Melody grabbed the suitcase that was standing at Madison's side and placed it beside the frame of the door inside of the house. As Melody did, so Madison took the chance to enter the house with the little space that was given from Melody's slight movement.

The house was the same from the two years she had been away. The same glossy hardwood steps, complimented by the beautiful chandelier above it, the only thing that she always admired of her parents' home.

"Mum is in the living room. Go talk with her while I carry your suitcase to your room. I will be back shortly."

Madison bit her lip not wanting to be alone with their mother. "Another good idea is that I can help you, the suitcase is heavy." She suggested almost pleading with her sister who knew of the mother-daughter confrontation all too well.

"Are not you excited to see your mother?" The voice startled both Madison and Melody. Madison turned her gaze a ninety-degree angle and mentally sighed as she saw her mother. The woman looked the same. Her hair was straight and jet black, unlike Madison's caramel colored hair, her outfit looked like it had cost more than Madison's monthly rent and her stone-cold expression was even more dreadful. It was not that her appearance was monstrous but her voice and the way she carried herself showed that she held authority. The woman was able to get anything she wanted, well except for being able to control her youngest daughter.

Amanda, her mother, walked over and wrapped her delicate arms around Madison's upper torso. She released the embrace shortly after and composed herself to the elegant woman she was.

Madison took a breath, experiencing a strange feeling in her chest. It had been awhile since she felt her mother's love, even if it was not much to declare, it was better than nothing. As her emotions were beginning to arise she felt it best to pretend to ignore her mother's presence. She was fearful of making conversation which often led to her mother ranting about how much of a disappointment and disgrace she was.

"Maddy, can you help me here?" Melody pretended to have difficulty lifting the suitcase, she did so on purpose to break the awkward silence and to relieve Madison from having an upcoming discussion with their mother. She remembered the last time the two had a meaningful discussion, well it was more to be described as an argument, Madison ended up migrating to the United States.

Their mother sauntered back into the living room, she had a few topics on her mind, none of which Madison would have enjoyed having the knowledge about. "Thank you for that," Madison said as a slow breath escaped her lips. She lifted the suitcase not bothering with Melody's help.

Her older sister rolled her eyes but did not object to not having to assist in fetching something so heavy, at least she offered.

Madison placed the suitcase on her bed and looked around the room. It had been a while, but everything looked to be in place just how she left it.

Melody went into the room almost every month, she loved admiring the framed pictures on the wall that captured the memories of the sisters' life together.

Looking at the pictures, Madison thought back to how she was a sentimental person, she was not like that anymore.

She also remembered all the nights she stayed up late thinking about her only crush or when the two sisters would have girl talk but also all the pain she kept to herself. She closed her eyes as the sad memories flooded through her mind, overshadowing the good ones.

Her room was her haven, the only place she had time to be alone, to face all her pain on her own. Her sister was always there for her, but there were certain things that Melody could not understand. She did not blame her sister, she did have her own life to live.

She scanned the few posters that were plastered on the walls, of celebrities that held little to no meaning to her anymore.

"It has not changed a bit," Madison said stopping herself from over thinking on her past. She faked a smile as she focused her eyes on her older sister who sat on her bed gleaming at the walls. Looking at her elder sister, Madison wished she had that sincere happiness.

"It has good memories," Melody said as she fixed her eyes on a picture on the wall of the two. They were young and in the backyard as they each sat on one of the two swings of their jungle gym. It was the Christmas present they had both begged their parents to gift them. It was not that their parents could not have afforded it. It was just that their mother deemed it not appropriate to have a place in her gorgeous backyard. Sometimes, like her sister, she hated her mother for her selfish ways. But with reluctance to give up, they got what they wanted.

Madison unzipped her suitcase to reveal a rectangular gift-wrapped present at the top. Melody's attention drifted away from the picture frame. It then focused on the purple-wrapped present she wanted to snag and tear open. Madison took it out and handed it to her sister. She still had to get the actual wedding gift for the day. But she wanted to surprise her sister with one since she knew Melody loved presents.

Melody stared at the lovely white bow on top of the box.
A huge smile spreads across her tiny lips. "Open it." Her sister commanded, and she hastily complied as she tore off the gift wrapping.

Melody examined the gift. She lifted it from the comfort of the secured box and felt like hugging her little sister.

"I love it!" Melody wrapped her arms around her sister's neck and placed a kiss on her cheek. They released their embrace and Melody continued to stare at the revealed gift.

"How did you afford this?" She contemplated in her mind if her sister stole it which was stupid to think of. Madison would have felt so guilty that she would have not only returned what she had stolen but also pay for it.

"Do I need to refresh your memory that I am a best-selling author?" Madison said in a tone as if she were offended but she was not.

"I almost forgot about that," Melody grinned. She was definitely wearing her new Christian Louboutin heels on her wedding day. Black complimented everything. "I am kidding. I love your new book by the way. To tell the truth, mum was not too pleased about it." Madison sighed as Melody slipped one foot after the other into the pair of heels. They seemed to be the perfect fit.

Her mother was never pleased with anything. But she knew her mother would have disapproved of the book because of its sexual and explicit content. But that made her readers enjoy them even more.

"She will never approve of anything I do." Madison sighed as she stared into the suitcase that contained her folded clothes.

She then regretted packing her undergarments right below where the gift once rested, it was visible for Melody to see. She knew she was in for a lot of teasing about it. She looked up at her sister to see that her eyes landed at what Madison’s eyes were fixated on moments prior.

"You seem to have packed for a honeymoon instead of my wedding." Her sister looked at the lace undergarments that Madison was always fond of. "I am guessing you are planning to get laid." Madison groaned as she slammed the cover over the suitcase so that what was inside was no longer visible for anyone's eyes to see.

"Out!" Madison yelled as Melody got off the bed with a swift movement and walked towards the door.

"Get ready, guests will be arriving shortly." Madison groaned as her sister slammed the door after she exited. She should have expected that they would have hosted a dinner on her behalf.

  CHAPTER TWO

Madison took a long shower to wash away the feeling of not showering for almost an entire day. She then grabbed the towel that was folded on top of the sink, presumably her sister left it there for her, and dried her smooth skin. She wrapped the towel around her body and looked at herself in the mirror. Her reflection blurred from the fog the hot steam of the shower left behind. She walked out of the adjoining bathroom and into her room to her suitcase so that she could retrieve her body lotion.

She rubbed her skin with her sweet aromatic lavender lotion before finding a matching pair of lingerie, while remembering that her sister was teasing her about it. Melody loved teasing Madison since they were young. It was annoying at times, but Madison still loved her sister.

She slid her legs through the lace underwear and pulled it up to her slim waist. She was about to slip her arms through the strap of her bra when she decided against it and threw it back into the suitcase.

Over the past months, she had become more and more claustrophobic and bras did not help much with the situation.

She took out a baby blue strapless dress that she had recently bought and pulled it over her head and down her body. She smoothed the material down her torso and hoped that the night would not have gotten too chilly, which would make her nipples harden through the fabric. But they would have been indoors all night anyway.

Standing in front of the mirror, she brushed her long, caramel hair. She walked back over to her suitcase and took out the small pouch which held the little makeup she used. She applied some lip gloss and coated her lashes with mascara as she looked at her reflection in the small mirror she kept in the pouch as well.

She then took out her own pair of gray Christian Louboutin heels. She bought hers the same time she bought her sister's. She slipped her feet into them and exited the room satisfied with her appearance.

Walking down the steps of the house, she heard a few people chatting in the living room. She walked in and first caught sight of her father sitting in his leather chair. He was sitting among a few people she had not had the pleasure to have met yet.

She walked over to her father who also spotted her and stood to give his daughter a warm embrace. They released their embrace and he gave her a kiss on her forehead. "I am happy you are back."

"Hm, not for long." He shook his head with a smile plastered on his lips.

She immediately caught the eye of her mother sitting next to another older woman. She presumed that the woman was her sister's soon-to-be mother-in-law. "We will talk later, okay?" She nodded always having that feeling of love vibrating off her father. He was a bit distant even when they lived in the same house and she always suspected it was for a particular reason but never indulged herself in actually believing that it was true. "Madison, this is Gloria." Her father introduced. She shook the older woman's hand since it would have been awkward to have hugged her while she was sitting.

She then turned to see her sister standing beside a young gentleman, presumably her fiancée.

"Maddy, this is Troy." Melody introduced, her voice seemed a bit off and not as happy as she was earlier. Madison wondered about the reason.

"I have heard a lot about you." Madison pulled him in for a hug, not wanting him to feel left out. She was not one for much affection, but it seemed to call for it because of the occasion, "and I cannot promise good things." She continued with a smirk on her face.

"Maddy, don't you dare." Melody threatened.

Madison rolled her eyes. "Payback for earlier." She started remembering her sister glaring at her undergarments.

"I have heard a lot of tales about you and trust me when I say, there are worse stories than what you have been told about me."

Madison shot a glare at her sister for spilling her embarrassing past.

"Please tell me you did not tell him about that summer."

Troy grinned. "You mean that summer when you were dared to skinny dip in the lake?"

Madison's face turned redder than crimson. She covered her blushed cheeks with her hands. "I will get you back for that," Madison warned.

Melody shrugged her shoulders. "We are getting married. He knows everything." That did not make Madison feel any better about herself.

"Dinner is ready." She heard her mother say to the crowd and everyone walked towards the dinner table.

Madison then saw that there was someone else she did not get the pleasure to have met sitting at the table and before another second went by she wanted to strangle her mother to death.

She looked over at her sister from across the table who mouthed a 'sorry' as Madison glared daggers at her.

The man sat right next to Madison which she knew was no coincidence. Madison wanted to scream on top of her lungs but decided against it since she did not want to cause a scene.

She then saw the next set of eyes she was not yet introduced to but that was not needed since she already knew the person. She was sitting on the other side of Madison. At least she could have had the chance to ignore whoever he was.

"Victoria." She said as the woman gave her a warm smile.

"I thought you were ignoring me, Maddy." The woman chuckled.

"I did not see you until now." She said as she studied the woman's features. Was she dreaming or was she actually face to face with her long-term crush?

"I know. I just arrived." She looked amazing even though she could not have seen her full frame. The woman always looked stunning even when she was just a teenager. "It has been a long time though. You are living in New York, right?"

Madison nodded, "I am. It is a far distance away from London." Madison then felt self-conscious about her appearance. Was her hair messy? Maybe she
should have worn a bit more makeup or maybe she should have chosen a better outfit.

"You look amazing," Victoria stated. She thought that Madison looked amazingly stunning. She changed, but even more beautiful than she was before. She was more beautiful than anything she could have imagined, but she always knew Madison had beauty incomparable to any other.

Madison blushed, her cheeks heating up. "You do too."

It was like Madison felt only Victoria's presence at the table. But her little happiness soon came to an end when her mother snapped her back to reality from staring at the beauty.

"Madison, this is Anderson, my good friend's son." She said as the butler placed the appetizers in front of everyone at the table. Her mother must have hired him for the night.

Madison rolled her eyes not paying any attention to the man who sat beside her. "And why is he here?" She said in a blunt tone of voice not caring if it hurt anyone's feelings.
